Fungal Nails

Fungal Nails

Fungal nails, or onychomycosis (OM), are a common problem that podiatrists encounter every day. While not serious, many people are bothered by the thickness and discolouration it can cause in their toenails.

What Causes Fungal Nails?

Fungal nails are caused by an overgrowth of tiny, microscopic organisms called fungi. These fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, which causes them to proliferate. Fungal infections can also affect your fingernails but mostly target toenails because your feet spend a lot of time confined in socks and shoes, creating the perfect environment for fungi to grow.

Fungal infections can spread through contact with infected objects or surfaces, but they can also arise from fungi already present on your body. It’s the overgrowth in, under, or on your nails that leads to the infection.

Tips for Preventing Fungal Infections

  1. Wash and Dry Your Feet Every Day: Keeping your feet clean and dry is crucial in preventing fungal infections.

  2. Wear Clean Socks Daily: Opt for natural fibres like cotton or bamboo. The Bamboo socks from Sock Shop are a great choice!

  3. See a Podiatrist for Regular Check-Ups: Regular professional foot care can help catch and treat any issues early.

Treatment Options for Fungal Nails

If you already have a fungal infection, several treatment options are available. Unfortunately, they all take some time to work, and in most cases, you have to wait for the infected nail to grow out.

  • Oral Anti-Fungal Medication: These need to be prescribed by your GP

  • Topical Creams or Nail Lacquers: These can be applied directly to the affected nails and nail bed and surrounding skin

Always consult with your podiatrist to discuss the best course of treatment for you. The treatment plan can vary depending on the severity of your OM and the type of fungus causing it.

Taking these steps can help manage and prevent fungal infections, keeping your feet healthy and your nails looking their best.
